1 | Lemongrass Leave in Conditioner

Size: 8oz

Price: £10.99

About

The Lemongrass Leave-In Conditioner is the perfect moisture solution for all hair types. This lightweight leave-in conditioner will penetrates deep into hair cortex to lock in moisture, soften, strengthen and condition each strand. Infused with Essential oils, Aloe Vera and Silk Amino Acid that will repair dry damaged hair and promote moisture from the inside the cuticle.

Scent & Texture

The first thing you do when you discover a new product is to read the description. But with this product, the first thing you NEED to do is…unscrew the top, place your nostril over the bottle and give it a good old sniff. This leave in conditioner smells absolutely delightful. I tend to gravitate towards products that have a sweet fragrance, but this scent is so zesty and refreshing, you can’t wait to get it onto your hair.

Application

Prior to application I shampooed my hair and then followed up with a deep conditioner. I then followed the directions on the bottle and saturated my wet strands with the product. But don’t worry ladies, it also recommends using it on dry hair.

On application I was instantly hit with the fresh, zesty smell of the lemongrass, which was great. The product is very watery and light, so it made it easy to apply to my hair and scalp. Within seconds of applying the product, my natural coils started to pop. As a naturalist, you can't wait for these moments , as you get so excited to see your natural hair react in such a simple way.

Results

This product smells absolutely fantastic and is packed with ingredients (Aloe Vera, coconut oil, amino acids and essential oils) that my hair agrees with and of course needs.

My hair took really well to the product as it felt really soft and moisturised, but I noticed that some of the product did sit on my hair as opposed to being absorbed. Could this be down to the deep conditioner prior to application? Or is this just how the product works? Who knows, I just know that it smelled great and I was looking forward to the results.

2 | Creme Brulee Curling Delight

AN_CurlingDelight.jpg

Size: 236ml

Price: £13.99

About

This Creme Brulee Curling Delight will make your curls will POP!! With a yummy Pineapple scent, it is also contains Aloe Vera, Agave Nectar and Argan Oil, that will give your curls an A+ rating. Infused with nourishing oils such as almond oil and coconut oil it hydrates and moisturises. It also works to smooth hair cuticle to reduce frizz while clumping and elongating your curls to create the polished curly look you desire. This product will not leave hair dry, crunchy, sticky or greasy. Just touchable hydrating curls that stays defined for days. Perfect for Wash and go for Kinky and Curly textures.

Scent & Texture

In my opinion you can never go wrong when pineapple is involved, so I was excited to have received this amazingly fruity, curling delight. The scent is also similar to icing, which makes you want to dip your finger in and taste. But of course I didn’t. That would be ridiculous.

The texture has a similar consistency to Eco-Styler Gel, so I was a little bit anxious, as my hair prefers stylers that have a creamy/buttery like texture. But hey ho, if I don’t try, then I won’t know.

Application

After applying the Lemongrass Leave-in Conditioner, it was time to explore this wonderfully sweet smelling curling product, which promises to make my curls pop. It also promises to reduce frizz, elongate my curls to create the polished curly look that most of us desire. I get really excited when it comes to using stylers for the first time, so I couldn’t wait to see the results.

The instructions state that you should apply the product to wet or damp hair, followed by their Lemongrass Leave in Conditioner. But as this had already been applied, I ignored that step.

I sectioned my hair into 8 sections (4 rows on each side), applied a finger tip amount to each section, detangled and then did a two strand twist with bantu knots (for my twist out). Whilst twisting it felt like I didn’t have enough of the product in my hair, so I found myself adding a little bit more, which I didn’t like.

Overloading my fine strands with too much product tends to end in a failed twist out, so I was a little apprehensive about the results. I then covered my hair with a satin bonnet and left my twists to dry overnight.

Results

When I unraveled my twists the following day, my hair was super soft and it felt really moisturised. Yay! But unfortunately my twist out was a fail. Boooooo!

My natural coils looked nice and shinny but my twists were frizzy which meant I lacked curl definition. Plus my curls weren’t elongated as promised.

I’m apart of the high shrinkage club, so I don’t expect all products to elongate my strands, but it would have been nice to achieve a more polished curly look.

I was disappointed that it failed to achieve a style that I could rock with confidence the following day. But I was happy with how soft and moisturised my hair felt, even after a couple days when my hair was stretched.

What would I do differently?

On my second attempt I think I’ll use less of the Creme Brulee and add some hair gel in the mix to achieve more defined curls and hopefully get them to last longer.

Product Review / Lush R&B Hair Moisturiser

Lush_RB_Intro.png

Product / Lush - R&B Hair Moisturiser

Price / £11.25

Rating / 10/10

Where to Buy /  www.lush.co.uk/products/styling/rb

About / R&B is made with an extremely rich blend of oils and butters to restore your hair to its natural beauty. We believe good hair starts at your roots, so we’ve added ingredients that work on calming the scalp. Not only does this hydrate your hair, it will also leave it softly perfumed with bay and orange flower absolute. Just scoop up as much as you need onto wet or dry hair to experience the benefits of a rich treatment on your hair.

My Thoughts

"Revive the hair and balances the scalp. A leave-in moisturiser, full of beautiful butters, oils and herbs. For all dry and curly hair types". This is definitely what you want to hear as a naturalist.

Don't you just love the stickers that Lush put on their products. They tell you who it was created by (including a illustration of that person), when it was made and it gives you a use by date. I think this is a really nice touch and it makes you feel like the product was made with love.

Smell & Texture

Guys I absolutely love the fragrance. The smell is quite strong but if you love Jasmine you certainly won't mind. It lingers on your hair all day long and it gives you that "just washed" smell every day.

The texture is very thick and creamy and has a similar consistency to Palmers Cocoa Butter lotion. Thankfully a little goes a long way as a 100g tub cost £11.25. This is pretty expensive compared to other hair moisturisers.

Application

This product  has been developed for those with afro or very curly hair types. It's aim is to revitalise dry hair and scalp, which is perfect for me. Having used this product for the past few weeks, i've applied it to both wet and dry hair. I found that applying it to dry hair works best for me as it's great for revitalising old twists outs and keeping my hair moisturised whilst in an updo.

Results

My hair absolutely loves this stuff. It feels soft, moisturised and light. I have fine hair, so I was also pleased to discover that my hair didn't shrink, dry out or go limp.

I was so excited, that I got my younger sister to try it out on her new tapered haircut and she hasn't put the tub down since. This seems to be the best product for giving her definition and it keeps the shortest part of her hair curly and moisturised.

What would I do differently?

Absolutely nothing. I'm a happy bunny :-)

Product Review / Lush Roots & Retread

After receiving some lovely goodies from Lush, I decided to review their Roots Hair Treatment and Retread Hair Conditioner. I was also preparing my hair for colour that week and I read that It helps to avoid products that contain dimethicone, as it may inhibit penetration of the hair dye. Thankfully non of these products contain this ingredient.

1 / Root Hair Treatment

Product / Lush - Roots Hair Treatment

Price / £9.95

Size / 225g

Rating / 8 out 10

Where to Buy / https://www.lush.co.uk/products/roots

About / The root to great hair starts at the scalp: we've used mint in three different ways to stimulate the scalp and hair follicles. We follow this up with conditioning and strengthening extra virgin olive oil, honey, and balancing nettle. The delicate, cheering perfume comes from a blend of neroli, grapefruit, and sweet orange oil. Apply to dry hair, starting at the roots. Massage into the scalp and leave for 20 minutes.

My Thoughts

I love that all Lush products come with a witty, poetic description. "Thine be the glory - Don't despair, we've got a treatment for thin and fine hair". I have fine hair, so with a description like that you can't go wrong.

Smell & Texture

On opening the tub, you can instantly smell the fresh mint leaves, which is great. It's also light and refreshing so it gets two thumbs up from me.

It has a thick consistency, rather like a typical deep conditioner, which is exactly how I like my hair treatments.

Application

As instructed I divided my hair into sections, 4 sections to be precise and then applied the treatment. I used a generous amount to ensure that my hair and scalp had full coverage. I then massaged my scalp for roughly 10 minutes (instructions state 15-20mins) as I got distracted, but I left it on my hair for a total of 25 minutes.

Results

Within minutes I could feel the product going to work. My scalp was tingling from the fresh mint and I was loving it. I could see and feel that my hair had absorbed the product really well as my hair felt really coated and the product seemed to make my hair feel thicker.

Rinsing out the product was a breeze and I loved that fact that my hair felt super soft and really moisturised. I could instantly feel the difference, even after I shampooed, so I'll most definitely be using this product again.

What would I do differently?

Stimulating the scalp is so important for hair growth and overall healthy hair, so for next time i'll be giving myself a scalp massage for at least 15 minutes. I may also leave the treatment on my hair for a little while longer. No harm in ensuring that I get full benefits from these wonderful natural ingredients.

2 / Retread Hair Conditioner

Product / Lush - Retread Hair Conditioner

Price / £10.25

Size / 225g

Rating / 3 out 10

Where to Buy / https://www.lush.co.uk/products/retread

About / Retread helps to mend the outer shaft of the hair cuticle by coating and strengthening the hair with oils, fresh fruit and yoghurt. Just use a generous scoop of this heavyweight conditioner and let it get to work. We use jojoba oil, avocado oil, and extra virgin olive oil to add moisture and shine. Fresh cantaloupe melon is in there for its cleansing enzymes, and yoghurt and soya milk for protein and to add extra shine.

My Thoughts

"A heavier weight conditioner that is there for you in times of trouble. Put a plentiful coating on the hair and let it go about its work". Conditioners are great for adding in moisture and revitalising dry/thirsty hair. So I was excited to try this stuff in preparation for my change in hair colour.

Smell & Texture

Guys, i'm not loving the smell of this product, one bit. It has an unusual, woody, old tea bag type smell which is too strong for me. Thankfully it didn't linger on my hair once I rinsed out.

The texture is pretty much like your average hair conditioner. It has a runny/watery consistency which is also similar to yoghurt.

Application

After shampooing I applied two handfuls of the conditioner to my hair, concentrating on the ends as they tend to get really dry. I then rinsed out the product with warm water, which was easy as the product is really light.

Results

I expected so much more from this heavy weight conditioner. My hair didn't feel as moisturised as I assumed it would be, detangling wasn't made any easier and I didn't get the wow factor I was looking for. Maybe i'm expecting too much too soon, as it does state that this product. '...helps to mend the outer shaft of the hair cuticle by coating and strengthening the hair with oils...'. So maybe i'll see better results in the future.

What would I do differently?

Unsure if i'll be using this product anytime soon. But if/when i do, i'll be mixing it with another conditioner as it contains some great natural ingredients which my hair can benefit from.

Product Review / As I Am Coconut Cowash

AsIAmCoWash_Intro.jpg

Product / As I Am Naturally Coconut Cowash

Details / Cleansing conditioner which removes product residue and preserves moisture.

Price / £10 - £12.99

Rating / 10/10

I can easily say that the As I Am Naturally Coconut Cowash is one of my top 5 must have favourites. If this product came in a form of a man I would marry him, because I can’t leave without it. Trust me when i say this stuff is AWESOME!

Pros

  • It thoroughly cleanses my hair and scalp and always leaves my hair moisturised and feeling soft.
  • It has a sweet, fruity smell which is amazing.
  • If you suffer with dry scalp then this stuff is perfect for you. As it’s a conditioner it won’t strip your hair/scalp like shampoos, so it leaves your hair/scalp moisturised.
  • Washing with two textures can make detangling quite difficult but this product provides enough slip to make detangling a breeze.
  • I apply lots of oil throughout the week so a good cleansing is well needed by the end of it. This does the job perfectly.
  • It does give you a nice lather but not as much as a shampoo, which is great as it means that it's not stripping your hair of it's moisture.
  • Works safely with keratin treatments

Cons

•    Quite expensive for a conditioner

Consistency : Medium creamy and   non sticky.

Consistency : Medium creamy and non sticky.

What is cowashing?

Cowashing means "conditioner washing" aka cleansing your hair with conditioner rather than shampoo. This is a gentler way of cleaning as conditioners don't contain harsh stripping sulfates, and adds the right amount of hydration to strands which cuts down on frizz.

How often do you use it?

I simply cowash my hair once a week. Within a month I would cowash my hair 3 times and then use a clarifying or protein shampoo once a month to cleanse my hair and scalp of any buildup.

What is your washing regimen like?

  • Pre-poo (this refers to applying oils and/or a conditioner to my hair hours before shampooing)
  • Cowash (shampoo once a month)
  • Deep Condition/Protein treatement
  • Moisturise (leave in conditioner, oils and moisturiser)
  • Blow Dry

Product Review / Arosci Intensive Restructuring System

About

The Arosci Intensive Restructuring System (IRS) is a revolutionary system of products featuring next generation protein therapies designed to tame frizz, smooth and straighten curly textures, and strengthen hair from the inside out. With the proven AROSCI Strand-by-Strand Strength™ Complex, AROSCI IRS delivers three levels of protection and strength for silky smooth length with superior shine for up to 12 weeks. Works on all hair types. Designed especially for Straight Seekers, Manageability Seekers, Natural Hair Wearers and Transitioning clients.

Why did I decide to use it?

After wearing my box braids for 6 months, I decided that needed something that was going to make transitioning to natural hair, as easy as possible and to help strengthen my hair. I considered the ‘Big Chop’ (cutting the relaxed ends off) and working with a TWA (Tweeny Weeny Afro), but I wasn’t ready to lose my length just yet. So after crawling the Internet for the best options, I discovered a keratin treatment called Arosci’s Intensive Restructuring System. This treatment promises to smooth and straighten my curly texture for up to 12 weeks and is aimed at those transitioning like myself. Unlike a relaxer, which permanently straightens your natural hair texture, the treatment is temporary and doesn’t use harsh chemicals. Great news!

The Result

  • I was curious about the ‘relaxer like’ results achieved by the treatment. I mean how good were the ‘relaxer like’ results really going to be. BUT I can confirm that I had silky, straight hair, which had body and bounce. So I was extremely pleased with the results.
  • My hair wasn’t bone straight like a relaxer but to be honest I preferred it, as the treatment made my hair look fuller and gave it so much movement. This is great for those with fine hair.
  • The first wash after the treatment was absolutely fantastic. Detangling was a breeze, blow-drying took half the time and there was drastically less hair in the drain. Yey!
  • It was so easy to go from curly to straight as I simply activated the treatment with heat, using my blow dryer (after I washed my hair) and straighteners.
  • One of the negative sides to the treatment was that I had to use quite a bit of heat in order to get my hair straight. And even though I didn’t need to use my straightener’s everyday, I was still worried about the condition of my hair and causing heat damage. So to avoid this, I reduced the amount of heat and kept my hair in protective styles (up do’s and twist outs) as often as I could to be on the safe side.
  • Managing my hair was really easy as I found that my hair was always soft, smooth and styling was straightforward.
  • I also enjoyed the versatility of wearing my hair straight or curly, which is great for someone who’s transitioning. But you have to remember that this is not a relaxer, so your hair can revert back to its natural state through heavy sweating, lots of moisture and humidity.
  • The treatment has a slight odour, which becomes a slightly stronger during the blow drying and flat iron process. But I wasn’t bothered by it.

After Care

I was advised by my hairdresser to use sulfate-free products, which will prevent stripping the treatment from my hair. She recommended two after care options…

  • Arosci after care products are designed to work synergistically to keep all hair textures in a harmonious state by cleansing, moisturising, strengthening, protecting and nourishing the hair.
  • Crème of Nature Argan Oil range is a high performance line which is infused with Argan Oil, rich fatty acids, vitamin e and antioxidants giving hair exotic shine, nourishment and protection.

I decided to go with the Arosci after care range strictly for consistency reasons. I was slightly hesitant as their products are quite expensive, but I was willing to make the investment for the benefit of my hair.
Overall I was happy with their after care products, apart from the Intensive Moisturising Treatment, which I found to be quite harsh on my hair. So after a while I stopped using it and replaced it with As I Am Hydration Elation, which does a great job.

I did purchase a few products from the Crème of Nature Argan Oil range to see if there were any differences. I didn’t really see any major differences, so I would definitely recommend the Crème of Nature Argan Oil range for those on a lower budget.

How long did it last?

Arosci state that the treatment should last up to 12 weeks. I'm pleased to say that it lasted at least 16 weeks on my hair. I'm assuming this is dependant on an individual’s hair type, washing routine, manipulation and just general hair maintenance.

Curly and straight styles

Curly and straight styles

Have you re-applied the treatment?

I’ve replied the treatment twice and last application was in September 2013. I got to a point where I was getting more curious about my natural hair and starting to fall in love with the texture. Plus I generally spend most of my time in twist/braid outs, up-do’s and protective styles, so there was no need for the treatment.

I’m really looking forward to seeing how my hair will look once I do the ‘Big-Chop’ (cut off the relaxed ends). I’m hoping to do this within the next year or so, so watch this space.

Have you tried this treatment? If so what did you think?
